I am grateful for Jokes.

There is nothing like a good joke to bring a room of dull boredom to a room full of vibrant smiles and contagious energy. A joke in the line at the market can instantly connect us to the people standing behind us in the same situation we’re in. A joke can recenter us when we are in the middle of a frustrating situation and keep us from blowing a gasket. And a joke can instantly show us in sad times that we will laugh again, we will smile again, and we will find joy again.

Here’s a little gratitude humor to get you laughing today.

The patient shook his doctor’s hand in gratitude and said: “Since we are the best of friends, I would not want to insult you by offering payment. But I would like for you to know that I had mentioned you in my will.” “That is very kind of you,” said the doctor emotionally, and then added, “Can I see that prescription I just gave you? I’d like to make a little change…”

I am grateful for Imagination.

Children have the gift of imagination. They imagine that they are doctors or pilots or professional athletes. They imagine that their bedroom is a set to a movie. They imagine that they are married to prince charming. If they can imagine it, they can experience it.

As we grow up, we often stuff away our imagination and put down our dreams by calling them silly or unrealistic. We think imagination is for kids. As a life coach, one of the challenges I have with my clients is helping them give themselves permission to use their imagination again. Even if it may be too late to become the next Michael Jordan, we can still change our situation with a little imagination.

Imagination can be as simple as imagining feeling a different way. Imagine finding your spouse irresistible. Imagine skipping down the hall to your desk with eagerness to begin your work day. Imagine turning in the best report or project you’ve ever done.

If we can imagine finding our spouse irresistible or being excited to go to work, we actually can change our perception of our situation. If we can imagine it, we can experience it.

I am grateful for History.

This weekend is Independence Day here in the US of A. In the midst of parties and fireworks (and maybe a little grilling in flip-flops), I hope we’ll take a minute to pause and reflect on how much our independence truly offers us. Thanks to our founding fathers and the men and women who have continued to fight for our liberties and freedom, we live a very privileged life. We reap the benefits that history sowed for us. Today, we are laying down the history that our future generations will look back on as well. Let’s choose to leave a legacy that our grandchildren and their children’s children will look back on and be grateful for. How can we positively change the history for our future generations? How can you  personally make a change?

I am grateful for Grilling.

The smell  of a grill firing up makes me want to grab a refreshing beverage, go out on the deck and relax in the company of friends and family. Grilling is both functional and fun. It allows the cook to mingle with guests, meals to be easily customized per guest’s order, the mess and the heat from cooking to stay outside, and in many families gives the wife/mom a break from cooking.

I am grateful for an easy and enjoyable way to feed and entertain friends and family that has been the central theme of countless memorable summer evenings.

Do you have any great memories that wouldn’t have been the same without barbequing on the grill?
